About Our Reef
The
Meso American Reef (Great Mayan Reef) began life as a prehistoric coral
formation over 1 million years ago and is now the world's second largest
reef system, exceeded only by the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. Beginning
off the Mexican coast in the southern Gulf of Mexico, this scuba diving
and snorkeling paradise extends south along the entire coast of both Mexico
and Belize.
With spectacular colorful coral formations and tropical sponges, the United Nations designated major portions of the reef as a World Biosphere Reserve in 1987. Bathed in the warm turquoise blue waters of the Caribbean, the reef is a natural refuge for sea turtles, dolphins, sea horses, and a host of other marine creatures. The governments of both Mexico and Belize are working to preserve this marvelous Caribbean habitat.
