A lot of progress has been made since our last infrastructure update on the Costa Maya.
Telephone, Cellular Phone and Internet Service
The downtown Majahual area now has regular phone service along with public pay phones (Ladatel). And of course this means high speed internet access.
Cellular phone service is also available in the area of Majahual. If you have a GSM phone, it will work wonderfully in the area, even if you have your U.S. phone on you. People with the older type phones (digital) will have service by the end of April 2005.
Hotels and Malls
A new 40+ room hotel is being built next to the cruise ship plaza along with two new shopping centers. Not only is the Costa Maya increasing their room capabilities, the Capital City of Chetumal is doubling the amount of rooms available in the area.
Gas Station
The Pemex gas station is up and running, 24 hours a day offering gas and diesel service. No more having to make sure you fill up at Felipe Carillo Puerto before you head down to Majahual.
Roads
The access roads to El Placer, and El Uvero are now completely paved. Road access to the Pulticub area, located on the edge of the Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve is completely paved.
Electricity
The areas of Majahual, El Uvero and Xcalak are now electrified.
Bus, Shuttle, and Taxi Service
You can now take the bus, shuttle (Combi), or taxi round trip from Majahual to the city of Chetumal.
Schools
There is a brand new kindergarten and elementary school in the Majahual area.
Trash Collection
There is a community trash collection service in the area with a recycling center.
Fishing Tournaments
The Costa Maya is now hosting two annual fishing tournaments. One is held during the end of the Easter break and the other one, the “Governor’s Cup”, will be held this year during the first week in June.
